Griffith Hack

Mike uses his background in research management and innovation to assist clients with the analysis and management of their intellectual property portfolio. Mike has a background as a research engineer and manager in both Australasia and Scandinavia, and as an intellectual property manager for a multinational manufacturing company. Besides continuing to provide IP management and audit services to some of Australia's leading companies, Mike has been heavily involved in a project that has Griffith Hack working with IP analysts, Ambercite, to help commercialise the advanced Network Patent Analysis (NPA) technique both in Australasia and globally.

Mike's interest in the value of patent data began in his research engineering days, and grew during his time as a corporate IP manager. Mike deepened this interest at Griffith Hack by using patent data to prepare industry technology reviews. However a realisation of the limitations of existing data analysis techniques led Mike to embrace NPA when it became available. "Patent data is the leading source of technology information available today", says Mike. "NPA can shine a powerful light though the tens of millions of published patents to identify and visualise the patents and patent groups that matter. Clients are embracing the opportunity to obtain the insight that can help their businesses forward in a competitive marketplace".

Mike is finding that the combination of working with client IP portfolios, and analysing global patent data, to be a synergistic combination. "Both are about using IP and IP data as a business tool to help provide a competitive edge". Mike is a regular presenter and is widely published in both technical and business publications, including IP and legal publications both in Australia and globally. Mike joined Griffith Hack in 2007.
